Spirit of the Beehive (1973) -- V. Erice
Gently surreal, as
perhaps all films shot in Spain are required to be. This one takes place in the early 1940s, far
away from civilization, where a travelling cinema brings fantastic
entertainment to adults and children alike.
For two small girls, James Whale's Frankenstein is a dramatic experience
beyond those that children are expected to have; its impact on them returned me
back to the days of the monster under the bed and Dracula hiding in the
closet. But the film is lightly fried,
not nostalgic, not horror, just rich with sublimely observed anecdotes and the
power of images.
